Truck Route Enforcement - Ordinance Amendment
NOTICE: Heavy trucks must use the new State Route (SR) 83 Connector (Monroe Bypass) to bypass and avoid downtown Monroe, Georgia, to avoid the historic district. This regulation is per the Chapter 94 Ordinance Amendment that mandates trucks over 26,000 lbs, or contain more than 8 wheels, or have a length greater than 45 ft, inclusive of all trailers or other attached implements, to use the SR 83 Connector as a through-route, diverting from US 78/SR 11 through downtown Monroe, Georgia for better safety and traffic flow.
Purpose: To remove heavy truck traffic from historic downtown Monroe.
Location: A 4.7-mile bypass connecting SR 83 and US 78/SR 11.
Mandatory Use: City ordinances are now enacted to require trucks (over 26,000 lbs, more than 8 wheels, or greater than 45 ft) to use the bypass as a through-route, keeping them off downtown streets.
Traffic Flow: The Monroe Bypass has the right-of-way at all intersections, all cross streets (such as Vasco Adcock Road, Old Monroe-Madison Highway, Pannell Road, Brush Creek Drive) have stop signs.
Opened: The Monroe Bypass opened in late October 2025, with initial accidents occurring due to unfamiliarity with the new traffic patterns.
Summary: The SR 83 Connector is the designated route for heavy trucks, intended to improve safety, remove hazardous conditions, and reduce congestion in Monroe, Georgia, and truck drivers must now follow these new detour signs and right-of-way rules.
