Street Maintenance

The Streets & Transportation Department maintains the City's streets, sidewalks, public facilities, traffic controls and signage, and right of ways. The department also operates an efficient fleet service center that provides preventative and corrective maintenance for the entire fleet of the city.

Fees

Service Fees:

The City of Monroe will bill you on your monthly utility bill. The charges and fees are listed in the attachment below:

All fees are subject to a minimum 3% increase on January 1st of each year.

Items The City Will Not Collect

  • Large trees and limbs larger than 5 feet in length or 6 inches in diameter.
  • Hazardous waste of any kind, batteries, paint, etc.
  • Waste of any kind that is generated by a commercial contractor.
  • Any yard waste that has been mixed together.

Commercial Pickup

This service is provided Monday through Thursday 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Friday 6:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Solid Waste department will provide a 2, 4, 6, or 8 cubic-yard front load container, for business located within the corporate boundaries of the city. You may request any size dumpster and number of days per week for pickup. Once this is done, the department can give you the information on what this service will cost. The City will collect the following yard waste items once per week. Items picked up are as follows:

Bulk Trash Collection

NOTICE: Effective February 14, 2024, the City of Monroe has placed a charge for every mattress or box spring picked up from each residence on their utility bill.  Effective January 2, 2026 new rate for each mattress and box spring picked up is $20.48.

Recycling

Recycling is collected weekly at the curb the same day your household garbage is picked up. Each resident is provided with one 65 gallon "Blue" recycling cart or one smaller 18 gallon bin, upon request.  After collection, the recycling bin must be removed from the street or curb by 5 p.m. on the day following pickup.  Please click the request form below.

Exemptions

If you are disabled and cannot take your garbage cart to the street/curb, you may come by City Hall and pick up an application to fill out or download the request form below and have signed by your physician for backdoor pickup.

Household Garbage

Household garbage is picked up weekly at the curb from a city provided 95 gallon garbage cart. It is the responsibility of each resident to place such garbage or refuse at curbside no earlier than 5:00 p.m. on the day before collection. After collection the garbage cart must be removed from the street or curb by 5 p.m. of the day following. Household garbage is the only type of waste that should be put in the container. Additional garbage carts can be obtained for an extra charge by calling the Public Works Department at 770-267-6933.
